How to create a project specific Administrator in MicroStrategy Desktop

In MicroStrategy , a single project source can contain multiple projects. All users, that are members of the 'System Administrators' user group, have full access to all projects within a project source. This document explains how to create a secondary administrator with full access to a certain project only using MicroStrategy Desktop

The following examples uses the MicroStrategy Tutorial metadata installed with MicroStrategy . The metadata contains three projects by default (Enterprise Manager Demo, MicroStrategy Tutorial, My First Project).

Following the steps below, users will create a project administrator for the MicroStrategy Tutorial project.
  • Log into the users' 3-tier project source via MicroStrategy Desktop as 'Administrator'
  • Create a user group called 'ProjectAdministrators'. Give the user group permissions for '8. Administration > Use Project Monitor' only.
  • Create a new user called 'TutorialAdmin' as member of group 'ProjectAdministrators'
  • Please note that by default each user is a member of the 'Everyone' user group'. If the Administrator does not wish for all users to have access to any project via the 'Everyone' user group, the Administrator has to select an empty entry in the 'Security Role Selection' for each project. Edit the user group 'Everyone' and change the Security Role Selection as outlined below:

  • In the Administration > Database Instance Manager, right-click on the warehouse database instance > Properties > 'Security' tab and give Full Control to the 'TutorialAdmin'.
  • Right-click on the Tutorial Project and choose 'Project Configuration'
  • Go to Project definition > Security and click on the 'Modify' button in the Access Control section. Give the TutorialAdmin at least Browse, Read and Write permissions.

  • Go to Project Access > General and click on 'View' to get the current Security Roles displayed
  • Create a new security role 'ProjectAdminSR' having all permissions, including bypass security.

  • Add the user 'TutorialAdmin' to the security role 'ProjectAdminSR'

  • Close the Project Configuration window
  • Right-click on the Administration folder (within the project source) > Properties > 'Security' tab and give the user group 'ProjectAdministrators' 'Configuration' access via the Access Control list (ACL).

  • Log into the project source as 'TutorialAdmin'
  • In the left frame of MicroStrategy Desktop, within the project source, users can see the Tutorial project but not the loaded 'Enterprise Manager Demo' or 'My First Project'.

Due to permissions on the Project Monitor, the TutorialAdmin can also use the Project Configuration window.
In MicroStrategy 9.x, if right click on Administration folder, the Properties option will not be available. Instead, please follow the steps below:
  •  Right click on a 3-tier project source
  •  Click Configure MicroStrategy Intelligence Server
  •  In Server Definition, go to General. Under Properties click  Modify
  • Click Security in properties and follow the remaining steps
